From the word "gyro" (meaning ring, spiral or circle) and "tonic" (to tone or invigorate), Gyrotonic training helps to increase range of motion, coordination, and strength by performing prescribed graceful, circular motions.

The Gyrotonic methodology embraces some of the key principles also found in yoga, swimming, gymnastics and ballet. By moving through several variations of these motions with the light resistance of the Pulley Tower, the exercise can develop integration and mutually supporting action in the major muscle groups.

Juliu Horvath has designed several Gyrotonic machines that facilitate total freedom of movement and tempo of exercise so that the body can focus on coordination, strength and flexibility without interference from the machine.

Most conventional exercise machines employ linear and isolated movements patterns, which create uncoordinated strength. The Gyrotonic Expansion System promotes multiple joint articulation, creating coordinated power in the muscles and simultaneously strengthening the ligaments. By moving in connected, natural patterns, the body flows smoothly between contraction and extension. This bridges that important gap between action and recovery of the motion and (again, unlike conventional exercises) brings balanced support to the skeletal system.
